PICKUPS with Catherine Watkins

Catherine Watkins started running in elementary school, stepped away through high school and university, and came back to the sport after having two daughters. She hasn't slowed down since. A Pan Am Games representative at 43 and Canadian 45+ marathon record holder, Catherine now coaches through her own business and as an assistant coach for UBC's Varsity Cross Country and Track and Field teams. We're lucky to have her in our corner.Below, she shares what she's learned from decades of running and coaching — and which Hettas she reaches for.

Name a woman who inspires you.
There are many examples but one is a woman I coach: she is a mom to two young children, one who has special needs, and works a full-time job. She set the goal of achieving a Boston Qualifier, and she did it. Her ability to balance her personal and professional goals with her family, that really set her apart. She fits in her training where she can, and she has the most positive attitude.
What’s something you thought you couldn’t do, but did?
Competing for Canada in the marathon at the 2015 Pan Am Games. I came back to running because I really love it; I had goals, but competing at the Pan Am Games was not on my radar until my coach suggested I try to qualify. I was honoured to represent Canada and happy that my daughters were able to watch me compete.

What do you find most rewarding about coaching?
I love helping people achieve things they didn’t think they could do. Helping individuals believe in themselves is extremely rewarding. To do this you really need to get to know your athletes and to find out what excites them about running. Then, it is important to support their training goals while balancing it with their busy lives. Being there through the highs and the lows is a privilege.

Why do you feel it is important to have female coaches on any coaching roaster?
In my experience, there are conversations that athletes feel more comfortable having with a female coach. These coaches can also relate to the physical and emotional changes that happen with female athletes across their life spans. As a coach, your role is to support an individual and their personal journey, so it is important that an athlete feels safe and comfortable discussing their lives both inside and outside of running.

What inspires you to train every day?
I simply love to move; I also hike, walk, bike or do the elliptical on days I am not running. I love the social aspect of physical activity and most of my friends are the same, so it’s a great way for us to get together. I also believe that staying physically strong will help me stay healthy as I age, so I commit to strength training consistently.

You’re at peak difficulty of a workout, race, or run—what one thought keeps you going?
I love to think about how much stronger this is making me, both physically and mentally.

Which Hettas are you currently training in?
I really enjoy running in the Alma Cruise. The way the back of the shoe fits my ankle/heel area keeps things secure with no rubbing at all. The foam in combination with the Pebax plate provide a nice cushioned ride while also allowing me to run faster. Overall a great training shoe for daily runs and even tempos.
